Trail Status

Rail Banked Agency Rails to Trails Chaparral, Inc. has been awarded a Texas Parks and Wildlife recreational trails grant for Merit to Celeste. The contract will be signed the summer of 2018 and the grant entails clearing, grading, and rehabbing all the railroad bridges and installing handrails on said bridges, installation of safety bollards, and regulatory signage. The estimated time of completion is the Fall or Winter of 2019.

Trail Surface & Condition/Challenges

From Merit to Celeste is the original rail bed except for a one (1) mile crushed asphalt section in Celeste. Exercise CAUTION on all BRIDGES, as the cross ties are deteriorating on the entrances and exits and there are no handrails. WALK YOUR BIKE over these trestles. Two bridges have been re-decked and have improved ramps to allow bikes to navigate safely.

No campsites are currently listed for the trail section between Merit and Celeste. Please continue to check the website for updates.
