Clarksville and Red River County are older than the State of Texas. Red River County once encompassed all or part of 39 different counties in present Northeast Texas. James Clark founded Clarksville in 1833. Red River County was established in 1837 and in 1938, Clarksville became known as the county seat.
Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie all entered Texas through Red River County, thus our claim as the “Gateway to Texas.” Clarksville is a Preserve America Community and a Texas Main Street City.
The Clarksville Gateway to Texas Trail (a 2-mile section of the NETT) is located in the city limits of Clarksville. The remaining 6 miles are located outside the city limits traveling East toward Annona, Texas. The Martha Lennox Memorial Nature Trail is north of Clarksville, Tx on Hwy 37 and takes visitors through a variety of habitats. The Ken Bishop Nature Trail is located at City Lake off of 1159 and the Historic Creek Walk runs 6 blocks in the downtown district. We invite you to visit historic Clarksville. In October of 2012, the city signed the agreement between the City of Clarksville and Texas Parks and Wildlife Recreational Trails Program for the Clarksville Gateway to Texas Trail (our NETT portion of two of the eight miles). The Federal share is $128,000. This was for a non- motorized trail, hiking, biking, equestrian, walking and jogging. The trail was cleared, two bridges were reconstructed, soil cement surfaced. Signage and bollards to be added.
Surface varies between dirt and the gravel of the old rail bed. Some low areas which hold water and mud after rains. Ruts are in some areas even when dry. NOT RIDEABLE. Please do attempt to ride on bridges.
Hiking, Biking
While visiting Historic Clarksville, public parking is available at the Clarksville Square, Library Parking lot on N Walnut, Courthouse parking lot, N Walnut, along the PRIDE Historic Creekwalk and Fireman’s Park, North Pecan, as well as Fireman’s park being a camp site.
Very limited parking in Annona.
